Bhadra B

Deputy Mayor, Cochin Municipal Corporation

Before entering into public domain, I was in to academics, teaching  information technology for 15 yrs. But as time passed by I was fully involved with various social activities of the city and initiated various programmes, thus following to become the Councilor in 2010. Assuming the post of Deputy Mayor of Cochin in early 2010 was tough as it meant socially responsible and committed to the society. This new post involved both governance issues as well as serious economic issues.

When I took over the financial position of this city, it was not in good condition and I had to really work hard to make it turn around. The city administration beingmale dominated, was the toughest challenge for me to go through. I initiated lots of structural changes in the way the financial issues of the city was handled over a period of time. As a result of this hard work and effort over the last two years the financial position of the city is better now.

We have now introduced modern methods of Accounting and Financing for the safe and smooth city administration. The credit also goes to a dedicated team who has remained as the backbone, behind me, supporting me and encouraging me.

Another mammoth task assigned upon me, as the Deputy Mayor of this metropolitan was that of preparation and presentation of City's budget. However the third annual budget is special as it focuses on making Kochi the first women-friendly city in the country through a number of projects. Many new ideas have been incorporated to cater to the needs of the city as a developing metro. The budget also focuses on improving the infrastructure facilities in the city.

kamal-malik

Ar. Kamal Malik

Founder and principal architect of Malik Architecture

Kamal Malik, founder and principal architect of Malik Architecture, was born and raised in the hills of Simla, a place of stunning natural beauty; and to this day, nature remains the source of his inspiration.

He completed his Architectural studies at the School of Planning and Architecture (S.P.A.) in New Delhi. His architecture is a fine blend of engineering and the arts.

He is a follower of the Patanjali School of yoga, and the concept of time, of continuity, of reflection, and of silence provides him with a theoretical underpinning, through which a syntax of metaphors is developed, allowing him, through his work, to comment on subjects ranging from urban decay and regeneration to the more abstract and intangible notions of homogeneity and purity, and contradiction and chaos.

Also an avid reader, he believes that the mind imbibes at various levels. The inspiration is out there somewhere- you cannot create a single leaf.

In his own words:

Architecture is not a standalone object floating in ether, it is in an environment, in a context, and all these things apply forces on it. One has to be open to them to find answers.

Architecture needs to be humane and to address the human spirit.

His firm has won numerous design competitions as well as National and International awards; & all projects designed by his practice have been published worldwide.

He has delivered lectures on diverse subjects.

For him, poetry in architecture is timeless.
