The role of texture in the composition of design cannot be overstated as it binds together all other elements of design, as highlighted by the Delegates attending the i Design session at A&D Mumbai
If design is a visual language, its texture and tactile feel can often serve as the building blocks of its lexicon. Texture is often an extension of the design concept and playing a key role in differentiating various objects and surfaces, transforming light and perhaps most critically being the early embodiment of the design’s ethos. Modern interiors, for example, lose some of their sheen without the use of glossy materials and minimally textured surfaces.
The role of texture, often underestimated in design planning, is a subtle yet important one. It has the ability to add a powerful, and subtle dimension to any living space. Texture is the visual and tactile translation of how we interpret any given surface; it lifts us from the confines of visual elements such as line and colour and adds a different dimension to the aesthetics of any space.
A roomful of eager participants were made to come forth and apply their understanding of textures in I Design, a session that served as the fountainhead of creative ideas and innovations focused on optimizing texture in built space. After careful consideration, each group told the tales of their ideas through a narrative earnestly heard by Bobby Mukherji (Principal Architect and Founder, Bobby Mukherji & Associates), each group, and the free-flow of ideas among the eclectic groups of professionals present served up some fantastic food for thought. Here are the ideas brainstormed by the many teams that pulled on their thinking caps and pondered all things texture.
The treatment that the team pursued is very similar to something they had seen employed in a well-known Mumbai restaurant. The team decided to make full use of painted glass & a steel mesh, which would be backlit to bring out its features. This combined with Somany perforated tiles used around the periphery of the room will create a two toned effect that serves as a nice contrast.
A mix of lights and an interplay with colors thrown into the mix is the approach this team chose to take. The team used the star as their design motif. They used a lot of fiber optics lights for paneling and etched the glass with a textured pattern. Additionally, the team used leather, steel mesh and carpets across the flooring to create a unique look. This was hemmed in by using a boundary of Somany’s ceramic tiles to create a dazzling look.
The team chose to focus on the corners of the room to demonstrate the potential of what can be done.
Back-lit resin with plant-like features will define 4 corners of the room. The walls will be done with an inner gold lining and light shining through gaps in the wall will create a unique, eye-catching look. The group came up with an idea to use fabric as a damping material to reduce any resonation that might be created.
Another idea of the group is to use woven metal mesh with light shining through it and the glass. This mesh will be sandwiched in between the glass and resin. The entire ceiling will be done in marble and controllable, multi-hued lights will be used to shine a light on the marble, creating a very dramatic look that is regal and gorgeous.
Keeping the basic design of a square in mind, the team created chandeliers to enhance the look of the space. They used a grey steel mesh to create an interesting chiaroscuro that would appeal the eyes of onlookers through its subtle, yet sophisticated design.
The team focused only on the ceiling instead of spreading their resources thin. They made a chandelier & divided it into 4 parts, with 4 textures melding into one. The 4 textures they used were leather, wooden panels, a steel mesh and a weaved texture. The combination of all of this created a diffused light that was at once alluring and unique.
The team found mesh to be an interesting option and pursued it with great zeal. They used it on the walls along with leather textured tiles. There is a lot of sheen on the metal fabric, which makes it the primary material of use and it can be used as a chandelier to diffuse light. Another motive of using such a setup is to create backlit walls, which will look very elegant in the evening. The backlit walls, if designed as per this spec, will create a diffused look that highlights only a specific area. A combination of glass and carpet on the floor would be used to create a good look.
Door to door, the level will use marble with bronze paint and CNC elements as well. Above it, the panel will use a teak veneer to add a touch of sophistication. The wire mesh in the entire panel will be backlit & acoustically treated. The carpet used is beige with bronze on the periphery. The steel mesh will used 3 levels of alcove lighting that subtly diffused light onto the metal, which will be a goldish-bronze color.
On the whole, the design will use a subtle, sophisticated play of colours & materials, and lighting was used in a creative way.
Flooring with in-built lights is something they looked to play with, along with step lights. Another texture that caught the fancy of this team was a steel mesh, which could be used in the ceiling. They were looking to hang it like a chandelier since it would look particularly beguiling. Onyx is also something that they thought of using, but not necessarily since it isn’t very hard-wearing. The design was created keeping a futuristic theme or outlook in mind.
A combination of fascinating elements was finally mooted for use. This included resin, wooden tiles, leather panels, steel mesh and 3D stone. Lighting was proposed to be used under the glass, with glass and resin allowing light to shine through the panel and create a diffused effect. Additionally, the group proposed to use steel mesh as a spiraling chandelier.
